SFT Mtn PA Flood is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with a pre-snap motion tag that shifts the back into the backfield before the fake. On the play side, the diagram shows a vertical route stemming outside, a corner route breaking hard toward the sideline, and an underneath flat route from the motioned back, creating a true three-level flood to overload one half of the field. On the backside, the receiver runs a deep dig crossing back over the middle while the tight end/back area shows a shallow drag, giving the quarterback a built-in outlet if the flood side is capped. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the intermediate flood defender, then checks down to the flat, making this a strong Cover 3 beater against single-high shells.
Defensive Reads
Key the flow of the linebackers after the run fake, if they bite hard on play action the flat and drag routes will be wide open underneath. Watch the deep safety to the flood side, in Cover 3 he has to choose between the vertical and the corner route, forcing a natural conflict read for the quarterback. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route boundary, so identify press or trail technique on the outside receiver pre-snap. If the defense shows two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4) pre-snap, expect the flood to be squeezed, so lean on the backside dig or the checkdown instead of forcing the corner. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the intermediate flood window (lurk technique), since this is the exact spot designed to be stressed and a smart user will jump the corner route throw.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense rotates or bumps a linebacker, this tells you if you are facing man or zone before the snap.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells by hitting the corner route over the top of the flat defender since the flood stresses one defender across three levels vertically.
If the deep safety rotates to the flood side pre-snap, work the backside dig immediately since the middle of the field opens up.
Pair this call with Mtn PA Cross Choice or Mtn Corner in the same set so the play-action footwork and initial route stems look identical, keeping linebackers frozen and guessing.
Best used on second and medium or first and ten when you want a shot play but still have a checkdown safety valve underneath if the deep shell holds.
