Breakdown

Mtn Outside Zone is an outside zone run play out of Shotgun with a jet motion tag across the formation before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping and sliding laterally to the play side to seal the edge and create a cutback lane, while the HB takes a lateral zone path aiming to stretch the defense before pressing upfield. This is a pure zone run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier goes playside edge first, then bounces to the cutback lane if the frontside gets sealed.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive line's gap discipline pre-snap since outside zone struggles against a shaded nose or 4i technique that clogs the play side A gap. Watch linebacker depth and flow, if the linebackers are stacked tight and scrape fast to the play side, user a defender to spy the cutback lane. Identify one-high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) as vulnerable to this run since they commit an extra defender to the box less consistently against motion. Look for edge defenders crashing hard down the line, which signals a contain blitz or scrape exchange designed to force the bounce outside. Two-high shells with quick-flowing linebackers and a hard-charging edge setter (Cover 4 or Cover 2) can shut this down if the defense maintains gap integrity and does not overpursue the jet motion.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage since a defender running across the formation with the motion man confirms man coverage.

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, especially against nickel and dime personnel that struggle to fit outside zone.

Hot route or user the HB to press the playside edge hard before reading the cutback lane if the defense flows too fast to the play side.

Pair this play with Mtn PA Cross Choice or PA Read from the same set so defenses that key run flow get punished by play-action shots off the identical formation and motion look.

Best called on early downs (first and ten or second and short) to stay on schedule and keep the defense honest against pass-heavy personnel groupings.
