Corner Strike lines up out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with a two receiver side to the right and a bunched three receiver look to the left. The right side runs a corner and flat combo with the outside receiver breaking hard to the corner while the inside receiver runs a flat route underneath, creating a natural high low stretch on the flat defender. To the left the receivers run a deep out, a whip route working back underneath, and a short drag crossing underneath everything, giving the quarterback a full field progression from the deep corner route down to the underneath crossers. This is a man beater built around the corner route winning over the top and the flat route holding the underneath defender, with the crossing routes on the other side serving as answers against man coverage leverage.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender on the corner route side first, if he sinks with the corner route or gets picked by the flat route you have a void to attack over the top Watch the deep safety rotation at the snap, a single high safety who cheats toward the corner route side takes away the primary read and forces you to the crossing routes on the other side Read the underneath linebackers on the drag and whip routes, if they sit in shallow zone drops without carrying the crossers those routes stay covered against Cover 3 or Cover 4 Diagnose man coverage by checking if the corner route defender turns and runs with the receiver at the top of the route, aggressive user controlled defenders jumping the flat route early open up the corner throw Beware disguised Cover 2 shells where the corner defender sits underneath, this take away situation kills the corner route and forces the quarterback into the shorter crossing concept
Usage Tips
Pre snap identify whether the cornerback over the corner route is playing outside leverage or inside shade since outside leverage opens the corner route immediately on the snap
Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 because the corner route wins big against those coverages when the corner is playing off or bailing late
Hot route the drag runner into a deeper dig or option route against zone heavy defenses to give yourself a sit down window versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells
Use this play on second and medium or third and long when you need a explosive gain, since the corner route stresses the sideline and can produce a chunk play or pass interference
Pair this with Mtn Corner or Four Verticals in the same set so the defense has to respect the deep corner shot on multiple play calls, then counter with HB Slip Screen or Mtn Smash when they start jumping the corner route
