Breakdown

Empty Mtn Y Cross is an empty backfield pass concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion adjusts the formation, and the diagram shows the Y running a deep crosser from the strong side all the way across the field, with both outside receivers on that side clearing out vertically to stretch the defense horizontally and vertically. On the boundary side, a receiver runs a shallow drag underneath the crossers while another vertical clear-out route occupies the corner and safety. The primary read starts with the Y crosser working across the middle of the field, and if that window is closed the underneath drag becomes the checkdown against man coverage or a soft zone hole.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties suggest the crosser will have to work through a defender in the middle of the field, while a single high safety opens up more room for the crosser to sit down in the void. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, because shallow linebackers who sink hard on the crosser signal a Tampa 2 or Cover 3 drop that will make the shallow drag the better option. Key the cornerback on the motion man, since if he follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and the crosser should win late over the middle. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the drag route, so if you see a defender hanging in that area of the throwing lane, hold the ball and trust the deeper crosser instead. This concept struggles against a well-timed zone blitz or Cover 2 with fast, disciplined linebackers, since the crosser has to cross so much ground that pressure up front can force the ball out before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the crosser will have a rub advantage. Against man coverage, trust the Y crosser to work through traffic and separate late, especially versus linebackers or safeties in coverage. Against zone, hold your eyes on the deep crosser to hold the middle linebacker and then check down to the shallow drag if the window closes. Call this on second and medium to second and long where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells, and pair it in your play-calling sequence with Empty Mtn WR Mid Screen or Empty Mtn HB Swing to punish defenses that key on the crosser and crash underneath. Mixing in Mtn PA Cross Choice from the same set keeps the run fake threat alive and freezes linebackers who start jumping the crosser route.
