SFT Mtn Inside Zone lines up out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with the flexed TE going into pre-snap jet motion across the formation before the snap. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the HB reads his blocking flow from the diagram to find the crease. This is a pure zone run play designed to attack downhill gaps rather than a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the play-side combo block: the HB presses the mesh point and reads whether to bend the run back inside or bounce it outside based on how the frontside double team and linebacker flow develop.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box: if the defense brings a safety down after the motion, expect an added run fit and consider bouncing outside instead of forcing it inside. Watch the linebacker level for downhill blitz keys; if the middle linebacker crashes hard at the snap, the cutback lane behind the double team often opens. This play struggles against interior nano blitzes and heavy odd fronts with a stacked nose, since the double team can get overwhelmed before it reaches the second level. Zone coverage shells with soft linebacker depth tend to allow easier movement to the second level, making this an effective zone run beater when backers sit and read instead of attacking gaps. Post-snap, track the play-side defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down the line, since a disciplined edge defender can string the run wide and kill the natural cutback the diagram sets up.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running man coverage across the formation, since a defender following the motion man reveals man coverage and confirms light boxes for the run.
Call this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy set.
If you see a stacked box with extra defenders inside the tackles, consider hot routing the flexed TE into a quick out to force a defender to declare before the snap.
Pair this with Mtn PA Cross Choice or PA Read from the same set so the defense has to respect both inside zone and play-action out of identical alignment and motion, creating hesitation in linebacker run fits.
Against aggressive gap-shooting fronts, mix in HB Slip Screen from this set to punish overpursuit once the defense starts keying the zone run track.
