Post Corner Up out of Shotgun Empty Chips Quads is a five-man route concept with no blockers, so every eligible receiver runs a route against the coverage. The two outside receivers on the left run a post and a corner off the same vertical stem, creating a natural high-low read on any single deep defender, while the two inside receivers in the bunch run a shallow drag and a vertical seam up the middle, and the boundary receiver runs an outside release into a flat/out route. This is a man beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progression going post to corner first, working down to the seam and drag as underneath outlets if the deep routes are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two-high or one-high, since Post Corner Up is built to exploit the seam between deep defenders in a two-high shell. Watch the flat defender and corner over the outside receiver: if they sink too deep on the corner route, the post will come open behind them against zone coverage. Against man coverage, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the drag route, since a user-controlled lurk defender can jump the shallow crosser and bait a turnover. If the defense blitzes off the edge with no deep help, expect the post and seam routes to be the quickest answers since there is no line of blockers to buy time. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender can take away both the post and seam simultaneously, so recognize the single high safety sitting in the middle of the field before committing to that side.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties or a single high safety before the snap since the post and corner combo is built to split a Cover 2 shell down the middle.
If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the drag into a slant or speed it up to beat any underneath lurk defenders sitting on the shallow crosser.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3.
Look to the corner route first against Cover 2 since it settles in the void behind the corner and in front of the safety, then progress to the post if the safety jumps the corner.
Pair this play with Slot Sail or Dagger from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both stress the same vertical passing lanes but attack different coverage shells.
