Cheat Texas X Sluggo lines up out of Empty Chips Quads with four receivers to the trips side and a single X isolated at the bottom. The X runs a sluggo (slant and go) up the sideline as the deep man beater, while the quads side stacks a corner route from the outside receiver, a deep vertical from the inside slot, and a Texas concept underneath where the inside receiver angles out and up into a shallow drag/flat combo read against man coverage. This is a pure dropback man beater designed to attack press or man coverage with a double move on the backside while the quads routes create traffic and natural picks underneath, so the primary read starts with the X sluggo against man, then works to the quads side vertical stack if the corner route or seam is open.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify single high safety looks since this play is built to exploit man coverage with the sluggo double move beating any corner playing without deep help. Watch cornerback depth on the X receiver, if he is in a soft shell off the line the sluggo loses its explosive element and you should reset to a quick game concept instead. Post snap, track the deep safety rotation, if he stays home in the middle of the field robbing the sluggo route you need to check the quads side corner route or vertical seam as the counter. Look for a user controlled defender lurking underneath the Texas concept routes, this is the biggest threat to the shallow crossers and can bait a bad throw if the quarterback locks on too early. Straight man blitzes with no deep help are the worst matchup for this defense since the sluggo will separate downfield before the rush arrives, but disciplined zone drops with a deep half or deep third shell will shut this play down completely.
Usage Tips
Check the corner leverage on the X receiver before the snap, if he is playing tight man or press this sluggo is a house call against any single high look. Use motion or a hard count to see if the defense shifts to man or zone, this play is built to be defended by man so if you see two deep safeties sitting soft, be ready to check to something else in the set like Slot Sail or Dagger instead. Hot route the shallow Texas concept receiver into a quick option route if you are facing zone coverage since the underlying crossers can settle into soft spots. This play shines on second and long or third and long when the defense is more likely to play man across the board to take away underneath completions. Pair it in a sequence with Cheat Fk Screen Cross or HB Screen earlier in the series to bait linebackers into overplaying underneath routes, setting up the deep sluggo shot later in the drive.
