Breakdown

Crossers is an Empty Chips Quads formation play out of Shotgun that empties the backfield to spread four receivers to one side while isolating a single receiver (the X) on the backside running an outside release flag route up the boundary. From the bunched side, the two inside receivers run deep crossing routes at different depths that stretch the field horizontally underneath the vertical, while the closest slot receiver runs a shallow drag/spot route underneath everything, dragging from the trips side toward the backside flat. This is a man beater built on natural rub picks from the tight receiver alignment, with the shallow drag as the primary read against man coverage and the deep crosser as the answer versus zone drops that widen out with the underneath traffic.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, that usually signals man coverage underneath which makes the shallow drag your money route to attack immediately. If the defense shows two deep safeties with linebackers sitting at depth, they are likely in a zone shell designed to take away the crossers, so expect a lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field. Man coverage teams that blitz off the edge are vulnerable here because the drag route naturally rubs off defenders in phase, so watch for blitz packages that leave a linebacker in man with no help. Cover 2 or Tampa 2 shells with a deep middle defender can undercut the deeper of the two crossing routes, so if you see that shell pre-snap, key the shallower crosser or the drag instead. Nano blitzes or all-out pressure packages can beat this play before routes develop since the quarterback needs a full progression, so if the offensive line shows a hot protection issue, expect the quick drag as the built-in answer against pressure.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the quads side, that tells you if they are rolling into a zone shell or staying in man across the board.

Your first read is the shallow drag underneath, it should come open almost immediately versus man coverage due to the natural rub from the stacked receivers at the line.

If the underneath defenders sink and take away the drag, work to the deep crossers, the two intermediate crossing routes stress zone defenders who have to pass off assignments in the middle of the field.

Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where the quarterback has time to progress through the drag to the deep crosser read.

Pair this with HB Screen or Cheat Jailbreak WR Screen from the same set to keep defenses honest on the quick game, then hit them with the deep crossers once they start jumping the short stuff.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the deep crosser that settles behind the linebacker level, it exploits the seam between underneath zone and deep coverage.
