Double Wing out of Shotgun is a heavy personnel gun set built on 23 personnel: two backs and three tight ends, with the wings aligned tight off the line on either side of the formation. Where standard Shotgun sets stretch the field with three and four receiver looks, Double Wing compresses everything inside the numbers. You get a condensed box with extra bodies at the point of attack, which forces defenses into base or run-heavy personnel and takes away the light nickel and dime shells most opponents want to sit in against Shotgun. The result is a run-first gun set that still lets you throw from a two-back shell.
The play art leans hard into gap and zone runs: Mtn Inside Zone, Mtn Inside Zone Split, Mtn Counter, Mtn HB Dive, plus QB Power and QB Blast for designed quarterback runs behind extra blockers. Because the wings are attached, they double as blockers on counter and power, giving you two extra puller candidates and a much stronger edge than any spread set can produce. Defenses that fit the run with only six in the box get out-numbered immediately, and against single-high looks the QB run game becomes a legitimate short yardage answer.
The pass game is short and structured, which is exactly what you want off a run-heavy shell. Mtn Spot and Mesh Sit give you rub concepts that beat man coverage from compressed splits, while Mtn PA Slide sells the inside zone action and gets the quarterback moving off platform. Because the wings start tight, defenders covering them are usually linebackers or safeties rather than corners, which is the core matchup advantage here: isolate a tight end or wing against a slower coverage defender, then attack the flat or the seam before help arrives.
Use this set on short yardage and goal line downs where QB Power and QB Blast let you add a blocker and still get a runner into the second level untouched.
Read the box pre-snap: if the defense fits with six or fewer, run Mtn Inside Zone or Mtn Counter and let the extra bodies win the numbers game.
When the defense drops a safety down and plays tight man, go to Mesh Sit and let the natural rub create separation, then hit the sit route in the vacated middle.
Hot route a wing to a corner or fade against Cover 2 or hard flat looks, since the flat defender has to honor the compressed release and cannot get depth in time.
Run Mtn PA Slide after establishing inside zone to counter users who start crashing the A gaps, and take the checkdown if the flat defender stays disciplined.
