Not in any team playbook.
The Gadget Package in Shotgun is a 31 personnel look: three backs, one tight end, and a single wide receiver, all aligned around a gun quarterback. It is built to create confusion, not to spread the field. Most Shotgun sets thin the box with three or four receivers. This one stacks bodies near the formation, so the defense has to respect run fits, misdirection, and backs releasing into routes on every snap. The tight end often lines up in a Y-Off position as an H-back, which gives the play art a kick-out or wrap blocker. That sets up the Power O and Power Read looks that most gun sets cannot run cleanly.
The personnel creates matchup problems because defenses usually answer 31 with base or heavy packages. That puts linebackers and safeties in coverage on backs running wheels and spot routes. The lone receiver is often isolated on one side against a single corner, while the backfield bodies pull safeties toward the box. Because the ball carrier, the read key, and the pass catcher can each come from a different backfield spot, the defense struggles to key on a single player pre-snap.
The playbook blends option football with play-action style constraint throws:
Read Option, Outside Zone, Y-Off Power O, and Y-Off Power Read form the run and option foundation. WR Wheel and Mesh Spot punish defenders who sell out to stop the run.
This makes the Gadget Package a changeup set for teams with a mobile quarterback and versatile backs. It is at its best when you want to test a defense's discipline against misdirection and edge reads.
Use this set on 2nd and short, 3rd and short, and red zone snaps where the defense is likely in base or heavy personnel, then attack the box count with Outside Zone or Y-Off Power O.
Before running Read Option or Power Read, identify the read defender and check whether a safety is rotating down. If the edge crashes, keep with the quarterback. If the edge squeezes, give it to the back.
When the defense shows single-high man, audible to WR Wheel and consider a hot route that turns the lone receiver into a streak or slant, clearing space for the wheel.
Against Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone, Mesh Spot is the call: work the crossers first, then the spot, and flip the play if the flat defender cheats toward your strength.
Mix Y-Off Power O and Y-Off Power Read from the same look to set up a tendency breaker, and use the set sparingly so the defense cannot build a counter call around its heavy personnel.
