Mtn Counter out of Shotgun Double Wing is a power run play built off counter action, with the offensive line pulling to create a lead blocker path away from initial flow. The diagram shows the ball carrier taking a counter step before pressing the hole behind the pulling lineman, with the wing and tight end personnel sealing the edge at the point of attack. This is strictly a ground scheme, not a play-action look, and the primary read is the pulling guard or blocking wing: press the initial misdirection, then get vertical off the puller's block once the point of attack opens.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: stacked or crashing linebackers are vulnerable to the counter step misdirection. Key the defensive end and outside linebacker to the play side, since a hard crash inside opens the edge for the pulling blocker to work. This play struggles against disciplined gap-sound fronts where the backside defensive end stays home and does not chase the initial flow. User the play side linebacker and force him to respect the counter step before committing, taking away the cutback lane. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, which signals run support and should trigger an audible to a play-action or RPO concept from this same set.
Run this play when the defense shows an overloaded front to one side, since the counter action attacks the vacated backside gap.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this is a green light run.
Use it on early downs like first and second down to stay ahead of schedule and set up Mtn HB Dive as a quick complementary hit if the defense starts flowing hard to the counter side.
Pair this with QB Power in your play-calling sequence so defenders keying on wing motion and pulling linemen have to respect two different power schemes.
If the linebackers are cheating downhill on snap recognition, motion pre-snap to slow their trigger and force a fresh read on the counter step.
