Mtn Inside Zone out of Shotgun Double Wing sends a receiver in pre-snap motion across the formation before the snap to shift numbers and identify defensive rotation. At the snap the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the HB reads the initial track downhill through the A or B gap. This is a run play built to beat base fronts and light boxes, with the primary read progression being frontside double team to backside cutback lane based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers cheating downhill before the snap, which signals a run blitz that this zone scheme is vulnerable to if unblocked defenders shoot the gap. A light box with only six defenders and safeties rotated to deep thirds or quarters tells you inside zone has a clean lane to hit. Key the play side defensive tackle and end, if they get displaced by the double team the cutback lane opens for the HB. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side motion can be beaten by a backside cutback if the linebacker overcommits. Stacked fronts with eight in the box or a linebacker blitzing through the A gap unblocked will blow this play up before the back can get to the line of scrimmage.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing man or zone coverage responsibility before the snap.
Run this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense is in a base personnel look with only six or seven in the box.
Pair Mtn Inside Zone with Mtn HB Dive and Mtn Counter to keep the defense guessing on gap direction while using the same personnel and motion look.
If the defense stacks the box or shows a run blitz look pre-snap, check to QB Power or QB Blast to attack a different gap with extra gap protection.
Trust the frontside double team and let the HB press the hole before making a one cut decision, avoid dancing behind the line against fast flowing linebackers.
