Z Spot out of Shotgun Cluster shows a bunch look to the left with a curl, flat, and a corner route stacked on top of each other while the Z receiver runs a spot route underneath a deep out on the right side. The lone in-line blocker to the right runs a shallow drag across the formation as a check down against pressure. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built on the spot concept, attacking the flat defender and hole defender with the curl and flat combo on the left while the spot route on the right occupies underneath zone defenders, so the primary read progression starts with the flat and curl combo, works to the spot route, and finishes with the drag underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high safety look which signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this concept is designed to attack through the flat and curl combo. Watch the flat defender on the bunch side immediately after the snap, if he sinks with the curl route the flat is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. If you see two deep safeties, this indicates Cover 2 or Cover 4, which can bracket the spot route and take away the easy completion, so be ready to work the drag route instead. Key the middle linebacker or hole defender depth, if he drops deep to cover the spot route it opens up the drag route running underneath him. Watch for a corner blitz or edge pressure off the bunch side, since the play has no immediate outlet on that side beyond the drag, a fast blitz can force an early checkdown before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety alignment pre snap since this play is designed to punish Cover 3 zone drops and hole defenders who cheat too far inside.

If the corner on the bunch side is playing outside leverage, hot route the corner route on top of the bunch to a deeper vertical to stress the deep third defender.

Use the drag route as your answer against a blitz since it clears underneath quickly and gives you a built in check down versus nano blitz pressure.

This play pairs well with Mesh Whip or 518 Hook in the same set since both attack similar underneath zones, allowing you to keep defenders guessing between spot concepts and mesh concepts on early downs.

Best used on second or third and short to medium since the spot route settles in quickly and the flat route gives an easy completion versus soft zone drops.
