Breakdown
Spacing out of Shotgun Cluster lines up the bunch to the right with a lone receiver split wide left running a quick out. From the cluster, the routes stack a shallow drag underneath, a quick out to the boundary, and a speed out breaking to the sideline, creating a horizontal ladder of throwing windows at three levels. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by putting stress on the underneath defenders with three receivers occupying the same short horizontal plane, forcing zone defenders to pick their poison. Primary progression starts with the shallow drag, then works to the out breaking route, and finishes with the deep out to the boundary receiver if the underneath zone widens out.
Defensive Reads
Read the underneath zone defenders immediately after the snap, if the linebackers and nickel sit flat footed in their zones without widening, the shallow drag will be the fastest completion. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone or spying the drag route, this is the most common way defenders shut down Spacing since it removes the first read in the progression. Check the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and the corners are playing off, that is a clear Cover 4 shell and this concept will find soft spots in the underneath zones. Against Cover 3, key the flat defender to the cluster side, if he widens to the deep out route the shallow drag and short out underneath will be wide open. Beware of aggressive blitz packages sent from the boundary or nano blitzes off the edge, since Spacing routes develop quickly but the quarterback still needs a clean pocket to read all three levels.
Usage Tips
Use Spacing on third and short to third and medium since the route spacing is built for underneath completions rather than explosive plays downfield.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or single high, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells are exactly what this concept is designed to shred.
If you see man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the cluster receivers, consider audibling to Mesh or Mesh Whip instead since Spacing is not built to beat man leverage.
Hot route the backside receiver on a slant or drag if the defense rolls into a hard boundary rotation, this gives you a built in answer against overloaded coverage to one side.
Pair Spacing with Verticals or PA Read in the same drive to keep defenses honest, once they start jumping the short horizontal routes you can hit them over the top.
