HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Cluster is a downhill run play that sends the HB on a hard angle toward the off tackle hole just outside the tight end. The offensive line uses down blocks and double teams at the point of attack while the fullback or extra blocker (if present) seals the edge defender to create the running lane. This is a run play designed to hit the gap quickly rather than bounce outside, and the primary read progression is: identify the first down lineman’s block, find the crease off tackle, then decide whether to press through the hole or bounce based on linebacker flow.
Defensive Reads
Look for linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers crashing hard inside can be exploited by natural cutback lanes. Watch the edge defender across from the tight end, if he crashes inside hard the play can bounce outside for a bigger gain. Against zone-heavy defenses with linebackers reading run-pass conflict, this play hits fast before flow defenders can react. Be wary of stacked eight-man fronts or Cover 0 blitz looks, since extra defenders in the box can blow up the play before the hole develops. Post-snap, key the user-controlled linebacker's first step, if he bites on play action tendencies from other plays in the set he will be late to the hole.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm whether the box has an extra run defender before the snap.
Use motion or a quick flick of the stick to identify if the defense is stacking the box for run support.
Pair this play with HB Counter and HB Mid Draw from the same Cluster set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to play base personnel instead of nickel or dime.
If you see heavy blitz looks pre-snap, consider hot routing the HB to check block briefly before committing to the run lane, especially against aggressive nano blitz packages.
