PA Read out of Shotgun Cluster is a play-action pass that starts with a run fake before the quarterback works a three level stretch to one side of the field. The diagram shows a deep vertical/corner breaking route stemming from the outside receiver, a dig route crossing underneath it from the middle of the cluster, and a flat route from the third receiver, while a fourth target runs a shallow drag all the way across the formation as a checkdown and the running back leaks out to the opposite flat on the play action fake. This is a man beater built to attack single high or man coverage, with the primary read progression going from the deep corner route to the underneath dig, then to the crossing drag or backside flat if the defense sits deep.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens a huge throwing window on the dig and crossing drag routes underneath. Key the cornerback over the vertical/corner route, if he opens his hips early and turns to run with it that signals man coverage and the dig behind him should be wide open. Identify any defender spying or sitting in the shallow zone near the drag route, a linebacker or nickel defender staying home there can jump the crossing route and turn it into a turnover. Look for a deep safety rotating to the corner route side post snap, that rotation usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1 with help over the top, which should push the quarterback to the underneath options faster. Beware user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flat or drag lanes since a good user can jump the crossing route read and take it the other way for a pick six.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when you have already established the run game so the play action fake actually holds the linebackers and safeties.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down post snap it usually means man coverage underneath so target the dig route breaking away from the flat defender.
If the corner route draws a bracket from a deep safety and a cornerback, come off it immediately and hit the crossing drag route for a big chunk gain against man coverage that lacks a rat linebacker.
Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and HB Counter earlier in a series so the run fake sells and the linebackers step up, then dial up PA Read to hit the play action window over the middle.
Use the flat route as a quick answer against Cover 0 or blitz-heavy looks since it gets outside fast, and combine this call with Mesh or Mesh Whip in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game and play action shots.
