Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells put more pressure on the user to cover the hook routes with a lurking linebacker or robber defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the defense drops linebackers into deep hook zones immediately, the concept can get clogged and the checkdown becomes the primary outlet. Key the flat defender's initial break, aggressive flat drops open a throwing window for the backside curl route working over the top. Man coverage with underneath help from a Cover 1 robber or Tampa 2 middle linebacker is the toughest shell to beat, since sit routes have nowhere to separate against a defender sitting on top of the route. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the middle hook route or jumping the shallow crosser, since that is the most common way defenses take away this concept in competitive play.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, two deep safeties usually means the hook routes will have soft cushions to sit in against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Use hot routes to convert the backside curl into a corner route against Cover 3 defenses that leave the flat exposed but rotate a deep third defender over the top.
This play excels on second and medium to third and short since the sit routes give the quarterback quick access to positive yardage without needing to beat tight man coverage downfield.
Pair 518 Hook with Verticals or PA Read from the same Cluster set to keep linebackers honest, since the hook concept punishes teams that sit their linebackers too shallow trying to jump underneath routes.
Against known blitz looks, get the ball out on rhythm to the first hook route since the sit concept naturally provides a hot throw against pressure without needing a built-in RPO.
