Breakdown
Verticals out of Shotgun Cluster sends four receivers vertically to stress the deep secondary, with three receivers stacked to the boundary side releasing outside, seam, and a deep out cut, while the backside receiver runs a skinny post from the numbers. The lone running back stays in to check block off the snap before releasing into a shallow flat route as a checkdown. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater that overloads one half of the field with vertical stems, forcing the deep safeties to choose who to cover while the seam routes split the difference between zone defenders. The primary read starts with the seam route inside the numbers, then progresses to the outside vertical if the corner sinks, and finally to the backside post if the safety bites on the trips side.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing since two safeties splitting the field evenly signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, while a single safety in the middle of the field signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch the flat defender on the trips side after the snap, since he has to decide between the shallow flat route from the back and staying home, and a good user will jump the flat to stop the checkdown. Track the deep safety rotation immediately after the snap, since Cover 3 defenses rotate the safety to one side of the field, opening the opposite vertical or post route. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed quickly by the seam and skinny post routes, so look for tight man alignment on the outside receivers pre-snap as a green light to attack vertically. Watch for a disguised blitz where linebackers show blitz then bail into zone drops, since this can bait the quarterback into throwing the seam route into a sinking underneath defender.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since this route concept is built to exploit both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by outnumbering the deep defenders on the trips side.
If you see Cover 2, target the seam route between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over, since that window closes fast against a good user in the deep half.
Against Cover 3, work the backside skinny post since the single high safety cannot help over the top of both the trips verticals and the post at the same time.
Use the running back check release as your outlet against a heavy blitz look, and consider hot routing the back to a quick flat if you see extra rushers creeping to the line.
