Inside Zone from Shotgun Cluster is a base zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps with a one back split zone blocking scheme. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading the defensive front to determine cutback lanes while the H back or tight end works across the formation to seal the backside edge. The primary read for the ball carrier is the frontside double team at the point of attack, then bouncing to the cutback lane if the backside defensive end and linebacker flow too hard playside.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap for linebacker depth, if both mikes are sitting inside 4 yards from the line they are likely reading run fits hard and you should expect quick flow to the play side. Identify safety alignment, a single high safety rotated to the play side often signals a run blitz or edge crash from the corner or slot defender. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end, if he stays home and does not get sealed by the H back this play dies quickly and you should cut it back immediately. This run gets stopped by gap or odd front stacks with disciplined linebackers who stay square and do not bite on the mesh point fake. It succeeds against defenses in nickel sub packages with lighter boxes or against linebackers who consistently flow hard to the play side call, leaving the backside cutback wide open.

Usage Tips

Run this out of the Cluster bunch look on early downs to keep defenses honest against the pass heavy formation tendency this set implies. Use your fullback or lead blocker icon to manually attack the first flowing linebacker instead of letting the CPU logic pick a lane, especially against 4-3 under fronts. Mix in HB Off Tackle and HB Counter from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the same landmark snap after snap, forcing them to respect misdirection. Against defenses stacking the box with 8 or more defenders, check to Mesh or Spacing from the same formation to punish overcommitment. Third and short or first and ten are ideal down and distance calls, and pairing this run with PA Read later in a series sets up explosive shots off the same zone footwork.
