Z Spot runs the classic spot concept out of Cluster HB Str, pairing a corner route from the outside receiver with a hitch/spot sit route underneath and a deep flat route from the third receiver to the same side, while the backside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers. The tight end or slot man works a short drag or hook underneath to occupy the middle linebacker as an outlet. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 by flooding the flat to corner window with three levels, and the primary read progression starts with the spot sitter underneath, works to the flat route as the zone leverage defender widens, then climbs to the corner route if the deep third defender bites on the shorter routes.
Defensive Reads
Identify the flat defender pre-snap: if a linebacker or slot corner sits shallow, the spot and flat routes will be contested, so lean on the corner route over the top. Watch the deep third safety to that side; if he stays wide and deep, the corner route will be tight, so work back down to the spot or flat. Beware Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where a safety and corner switch flat and deep third duties late, since a delayed jump can undercut the spot route. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed by the backside vertical route or the corner route beating a trail defender, so check for man leverage before the snap. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow drag or spot window on zone blitzes, since he can jump the underneath route if the play design gets diagnosed quickly.
Usage Tips
Use this on third and short to third and medium since the spot route sits down quickly and gives an easy conversion throw underneath zone coverage.
Check the pre-snap safety alignment: if you see two deep safeties rotate to one high after the snap, expect Cover 3 and trust the spot to flat to corner progression.
Motion the HB or use a hot route on the drag runner to give yourself a built in checkdown against man coverage disguised as zone.
Pair this play with Post Curls or Verticals in the same set so you can run similar formations and motion but attack different levels, keeping linebackers honest against the flood concept.
Against Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, hit the corner route behind him; against a sinking corner route defender, dump it to the flat route for easy yards.
