Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Cluster HB Str is a classic screen play designed to bait the pass rush upfield before releasing the back into space. At the snap, three receivers push vertically or break inside to clear out underneath zones and occupy linebackers and corners, while the HB slips out to the flat behind a wall of blockers. The offensive line sells pass pro before releasing to lead block, making this a rush lane and blitz beater rather than a straight man or zone beater. The primary read is the HB in the flat first, with the vertical and crossing routes serving only as clear out and window dressing.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with press corners or off man, since man coverage defenders will often turn their backs to chase vertical routes and get lost on the screen. Watch linebacker depth and blitz indicators, if inside or outside linebackers walk up and show blitz this play is designed to exploit that aggression. Post-snap, user the closest underneath defender to the screen side and stay patient, do not bite on the receiver releases upfield since your job is to sit and read the HB. Zone defenses with disciplined linebackers who sink and read the backfield instead of the receivers can sniff this screen out and blow it up for a loss. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with fast flowing linebackers are the toughest matchup for this concept since they can rally to the flat before the wall of blockers sets up.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense shows pressure pre-snap, especially overload blitzes or nano blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge. Look for linebackers creeping to the line of scrimmage or safeties rotating down late, both are green lights to throw the screen immediately after the play fake. Use the vertical routes on the outside as window dressing only, do not force those throws since their job is to hold corners and safeties deep. Pair this play with Mesh, Mesh Post, or Spacing earlier in a drive so the defense respects quick game and blitzes more aggressively, setting up the slip screen as a counter punch. Best used on early downs or after you have shown Mtn HB Draw or Read Option from the same set, since defenders keying run flow will overpursue and open up the screen lane.
