Spot Lead Swing out of Shotgun Cluster HB Str is a classic Spot concept with a swing route added underneath, built to beat Cover 3 and other zone shells. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical clearout, the inside cluster receiver runs a corner route into the void behind the flat defender, and a third receiver runs a settle route at the sticks to sit down in the hook zone. The HB releases out of the backfield on a swing route to the flat, giving you a wide flat option if the underneath defenders squeeze the spot concept, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route, works down to the settle sitting in the zone window, then checks to the HB swing as the outlet.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety since this play is designed to attack the seam between the deep third and the underneath zones. Watch the flat defender and hook defender relationship post-snap, if the flat defender widens with the swing route it opens the settle route in the middle for an easy completion. Key on user-controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position near the settle route, since this is the most common way defenders take away the intermediate window. Against man coverage, the swing route becomes live quickly since it is difficult for a linebacker to stay in phase with the HB in space, look for man alignment on the HB pre-snap. Watch for zone blitz or Cover 3 sky rotations that add an extra underneath defender, this can clog both the settle route and the swing lane simultaneously.
Usage Tips
Look for two deep safeties or a single high safety pre-snap to identify whether you are working a zone beater window or need to lean on the swing as your primary outlet against man coverage.
Against Cover 3, target the corner route first since it stretches the deep third defender vertically while the settle route sits in the hole created underneath.
Use the HB swing as your check down against blitz looks since it releases quickly to the flat and gives you a built in answer versus pressure.
Pair this play with Verticals or PA Read in the same set to keep defenses honest on the deep middle and prevent safeties from sitting on the corner route.
Best used on second and medium or third and short since the settle route and swing give you high floor completions even if the corner route is covered.
