Mesh Post lines up out of Shotgun Cluster HB Str with 11 personnel and puts two crossing shallow routes underneath a deep post and a corner route stacked outside. The mesh combo picks off man defenders in the shallow zone while the post attacks the middle of the field behind it, and the outside receiver clears vertically on a corner to hold the deep half safety. The backfield stays in max protect with the HB checking down into the shallow flat, giving the quarterback a clean progression from the post to the mesh crossers and finally the checkdown if the pocket collapses.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are playing press man or sitting off in a zone drop, since press man is where the mesh concept does the most damage. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the crossers, that opens a throwing lane for the post route behind him. Key the single high safety rotation, if he cheats toward the post side pre-snap you should expect a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1, user the deep post defender to bait the throw and then close hard on the mesh crossers since underneath zone defenders will be occupied by the corner route stretching vertically. If the defense shows a two high shell with match coverage principles, expect the mesh to get picked up in man match rules and look to check down to the HB in the flat instead.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you expect man coverage across the board. Check the defensive alignment pre-snap for man press corners, since the mesh underneath is designed to rub off man defenders and create natural separation. If you see a single high safety, prioritize the deep post read immediately because the corner route will occupy the boundary defender. Against zone shells with two deep safeties, hot route the corner route into a deeper comeback or dig to avoid throwing into a squeezed window. Pair this call with Mesh Spot or Mtn Mesh Rewind in your play sequence so the defense has to respect both the shallow crossers and the deeper post shot from the same formation look.
