Verticals out of Shotgun Cluster HB Str sends four receivers vertical to stress the deep defense, with three receivers clustered tight to the formation and one isolated to the backside. The outside cluster receiver breaks off into a corner route while the other cluster receivers and the backside X all run straight verticals up the seams and sideline, and the HB stays in to help protect against the rush. This is a classic Four Verts concept built as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, attacking the deep middle void and the seams before safeties can rotate over, with the primary read starting on the two inside seam verticals working to the corner route breaking outside if the safety bites underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the seams will be the primary window rather than the deep middle. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker drop depth, a shallow drop means the seam throw is live immediately, while a deep drop into the throwing lane means you need to work the corner route or backside vertical instead. Track the flat defender and corner on the cluster side, if they sink hard on the corner route the underneath seam is uncontested for an easy completion. Single high safety alignment pre-snap tells you Cover 3 is likely, so target the seams between the hash and the numbers before the safety can rotate over the top. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting deep middle to jump the inside seam route, if he bites early the backside outside vertical or corner route becomes the higher percentage throw.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties or a single high safety before the snap, since this concept is designed to split Cover 2 down the middle and climb the seams against Cover 3.
Key the middle linebacker and both safeties immediately after the snap, if they widen to the corner route the inside seams will be wide open behind them.
Use the corner route as a late-window throw against Cover 2 corners who sink under it, and hot route the HB into a check release or quick flare if you need extra protection versus pressure looks.
This play excels on second and long or third and long when defenses commit to zone drops, so pair it with Post Curls or PA Read on earlier downs to bait a single high shell before calling Verticals.
Avoid calling this into heavy Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties already shaded to the cluster side, since the numbers advantage disappears and the seams get crowded.
