45 Quick Base is a designed dive run out of the Cluster HB Str set in Shotgun, built to attack downhill between the tackles before the defense can flow to the play side. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the gap off the center and guard, with the offensive line executing a straight-ahead blocking scheme to seal running lanes. This is a base run concept, not a play-action or RPO look, designed to pick up quick, north-south yardage on early downs.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage they can beat blockers to the gap and blow this up. Identify the defensive tackle alignment, a 0-tech or 1-tech nose can clog the interior gap this play relies on. Man coverage on the perimeter does not affect this play since it stays inside, so look instead at run fits and gap discipline from the front seven. User-controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately at the snap are the biggest threat, since they can shoot the gap before the line finishes blocks. Stacked boxes with eight defenders in the box shut this run down completely, so bail to a pass concept from the same personnel if you see that look pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, to stay ahead of the chains without tipping your hand.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this dive hits fast before linebackers can fill the gap.
Pair 45 Quick Base with Mtn HB Draw and Read Option from the same set so defenses cannot key on your run tendencies out of Cluster HB Str.
Use it to set up play-action shots later in the drive since the formation and personnel look identical to Mesh, Post Dig, and Verticals.
Avoid calling this into stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages since there is minimal cutback design and gap penetration kills it immediately.
