Mtn Snag Under is run out of Shotgun Bunch TE Wk with a pre-snap motion piece that shifts the bunch look before the snap. The classic Snag concept fires to the closed side: a corner route stretching the sideline, a flat/hitch settling underneath it, and a shallow crosser working under from the opposite side to hold linebackers, while the backside receiver runs a deep vertical to hold the safety. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender and hole player with the corner-flat stretch, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route, works down to the snag/hitch sitting at the sticks, and finishes with the shallow crosser as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender at the snap. If he widens with the corner route, the window for the snag route underneath opens immediately. Diagnose Cover 3 versus Cover 4 pre-snap by reading the safety alignment. A single high safety invites the corner route while a two high shell shrinks the sideline throw. Track the linebacker depth over the shallow crosser. Aggressive underneath drops from a Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink shell can jump the crosser and bait a turnover. User the underneath zone defender to sit in the passing lane between the snag and the corner route to force the quarterback to hold the ball and check to the shallow crosser late. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable to the corner route beating a trailing cornerback, so blitz packages that leave a linebacker in man on the corner route are a liability.
Usage Tips
Motion pre-snap to confirm man versus zone; if the defender follows across the formation it is man coverage and the shallow crosser becomes a live option against a trailing linebacker.
Key the flat defender first. If he sinks with the corner route, snap your read down to the snag sitting underneath for an easy pitch and catch.
Use this on third and short to medium since the snag route settling at the sticks gives a built in first down conversion versus zone drops.
