Mesh Slot Deep is a classic man beater built out of Shotgun Bunch TE Wk with the three receivers stacked tight to the formation. The two inside receivers cross low in a traditional mesh combo, while the third bunch receiver breaks the mesh and climbs vertically up the seam for a deep shot. The backside X runs a deep crosser over the top of the mesh, and the running back releases out of the backfield on a wheel route to the flat before turning it upfield, giving you a five man route concept with no play-action or run fake attached. The primary read starts with the vertical seam route off the mesh for an explosive shot, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the safety rotates over the top, with the RB wheel as a late arm punch versus man coverage or blown coverage on the edge.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the biggest green light here since the mesh crossers will rub off defenders and the seam route will win vertically. Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap: a single high safety who bails hard to the seam side signals you should work the mesh crossers underneath instead of forcing the vertical shot. Post snap, track any user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone since they can jump the mesh crossers if they read the quarterback's eyes early. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can squeeze the RB wheel route, so only throw it if the corner bites on the mesh action first. Blitz heavy fronts that send five or six rushers can get home before the deep seam route develops, so check your protection and be ready to check down to the shallow crosser against pressure.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium or third and long when you need a chunk play against man coverage since the mesh naturally creates a pick situation on trailing defenders. Check the middle of the field pre snap: if you see a single high safety with man principles underneath, throw the seam route early before the safety can cheat over the crossers. Hot route the backside X crosser into a shallow drag if you get zone match coverage that squeezes the mesh, giving you an easy checkdown. Pair this call with Mesh Mills or Mesh X-Post from the same set to keep defenders guessing on whether the mesh combo is the primary or decoy route, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their mesh drop keys. Against aggressive blitz looks, use the RB wheel as your answer since the flat release beats most nano blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge.
