Mesh X-Post is run out of a bunch alignment with three receivers stacked tight to the formation and an isolated receiver split out to the boundary. The bunch pieces run a classic mesh underneath, crossing paths just past the line to rub off man defenders, while one of the bunch receivers works up into a deep crossing route and the isolated X receiver breaks in on a post to attack the middle of the field. The HB stays in to help protect while the mesh traffic clears out shallow zones and picks off trailing defenders, making this a strong man beater with the X post as the explosive shot play off the mesh action. Primary progression starts with the X post for the big play, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the post is capped.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the mesh crossers the post window opens up behind him against man coverage. Watch the free safety rotation, a single high safety who bites on the mesh action leaves the post route in a one on one matchup you want to exploit. Against man coverage look for defenders getting picked off in the mesh traffic, that natural rub is the trigger to fire the post throw with anticipation. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can shut down the post since there is help over the top, so be ready to check down to the mesh crossers underneath instead. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the mesh routes, so watch for a defender sitting still near the crossers before committing to that read.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the bunch or a single high safety, since the mesh traffic is designed to hang up man defenders and spring the post.
Use motion or a quick glance at the deep safety rotation before the snap to confirm if the middle of the field is open for the X post read.
If you see two safeties deep and zone shells, hot route one of the mesh crossers into a sit route or speed up the post read timing since zone defenders will sink into the throwing lane.
Pair this call with Mesh Mills or Mesh Slot Deep on early downs to keep defenses guessing between mesh concepts, then hit X-Post on a critical down once the defense starts jumping the shallow crossers.
Best used on second or third and medium when you need a explosive gain, since the post route stresses the deep middle and the mesh underneath offers a safe checkdown against blitz looks.
