Defensive Reads
Watch the playside defensive end's first step, if he stays wide to contain the QB the CPU or user should hand it off inside immediately. Key the linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked linebackers close to the box signal a run blitz that can beat this play if unaccounted for. Look for a spy defender shadowing the QB, this is the biggest red flag that the keep option is dead and the dive is the only live read. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is where this play thrives since it forces a true one-on-one edge conflict. Heavy zone shells with safeties crashing downhill can shut down both the dive and keep, so be ready to check to a play-action or verticals concept if you see two safeties creeping into the box pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Check the alignment of the playside DE before the snap, if he is crashing hard on run downs he is more likely to be baited into the wrong read. Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are still balanced between run and pass fits. Watch for a spy or a defender staying home on the QB, that tips a hard read that will take away the keep option, so plan to hand it off immediately. Mix this with HB Draw and Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run fits without changing formation tells. Manually control the QB after the snap so you can override the CPU read logic and attack the softer side based on flow.
