Outside Zone out of Shotgun Box Offset Wk is a zone run play with the HB taking a lateral aiming point toward the edge, letting the offensive line flow horizontally to seal the play side before the back picks his crease. The diagram shows a standard 11 personnel look with the offensive line stepping in unison and the HB working outside off the tackle box, reading blocks from the edge inward rather than hitting a predetermined gap. Primary read progression is playside cutback lane first, then bounce outside if the edge defender gets sealed, and cutback through the backside cutback lane if the defense overplays the stretch.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap since stacked backers who crash down flow fast can blow up the edge before the tackle seals it. Identify if the defensive edge player is squeezing hard upfield, which opens the cutback lane behind the play side guard. Key the safety rotation post-snap because a fast-flowing safety filling the alley from depth signals the defense is scheming for the bounce outside. User-controlled defenders who spy the mesh point can jump the stretch, so watch for a defender staying square instead of flowing with the line. Heavy blitz packages with edge pressure off the snap often gas out contain, so patience through the mesh point lets zone rushers overrun the play.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or check the box count before the snap to confirm you have a numbers advantage on the play side edge.
Attack defenses that show two high safeties with light boxes since Outside Zone thrives when there are fewer defenders in the run fit.
Pair this with HB Draw and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation alone.
If the defense stacks the box or shows run blitz look, hot route the TE into a quick out or check to a play-action shot off this same look to punish overaggressive linebackers.
On early downs stick to Outside Zone to set up PA Read and Read Option later since the mesh point looks identical and forces linebackers to hesitate.
