Mtn Verts HB Angle lines up in Shotgun Box Offset Wk with three vertical stems from the outside receivers and slot, stretching the defense deep on both sides of the field. The HB releases out of the backfield on an angle route, working from the box across the middle and settling underneath as a check down against blitz or a man beater versus linebackers. The four verticals stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by occupying both safeties, while the angle route is the primary read against pressure or when linebackers bail into deep zones, with the progression starting at the vertical seams and coming down to the HB angle if the top of the defense is capped.
Watch the safeties pre-snap. A two high shell that stays split invites the verticals to work the seams for explosive gains. If the safeties rotate to a single high post-snap, expect Cover 3 and throw the seam route to the field before the flat defender or deep third corner can close. Man coverage without help over the top gets exposed by the verticals running away from trail technique, especially against zone read linebackers who bite on the HB angle fake. Watch for user controlled safeties sitting in the middle of the field lurking on crossing routes. This play does not cross the middle heavily, so it avoids most lurk traps but can still be jumped if the seam throw is late. Nano blitzes and quick pressure packages get neutralized by the HB angle route since it releases immediately into the flat and gives the quarterback a fast outlet before the rush arrives.
Use this play on early downs or third and long when you need to attack a soft two deep shell with verticals while keeping a checkdown ready against the blitz.
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing a two high shell. If they roll to one high after the snap it usually means Cover 3, so target the seam or hole shot on the numbers before the corner can sink.
If the defense shows man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route one of the outside verticals into a slant or quick out to beat press man instantly.
The HB angle is your answer versus blitz looks. If you see linebackers crashing off the edge pre-snap, plan to get the ball out quick to the HB in space rather than holding for the verticals.
Pair this play with Mtn Curls HB Angle and Mtn Y Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical stress and shorter route combos off the same formation and motion look.
