Defensive Reads
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap like corners in press alignment on the outside receivers, this tells you the trail route underneath should spring open against man match or straight man schemes. Identify single high safety looks (3 deep, 1 high man match) as a green light since the underneath trail action creates natural separation against man defenders trailing through traffic. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and reads the quarterback's eyes he can jump the in-breaking route and disrupt the first read. Look for a user lurking underneath in a zone drop, this is the biggest threat to the crossing routes since a smart user defender can sit in the passing lane and undercut both the trail and in routes. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can bracket the vertical routes on the outside, forcing the quarterback to live or die on the underneath crossers against a numbers disadvantage in the box.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check if the defense shows man coverage with corners lined up tight on the outside receivers since the trail concept thrives against man press and man match shells.
Use the vertical routes on the outside as a hold-up tool against zone drops, forcing safeties to respect the deep shots before you check down to the underneath crossers.
Hot route the in-breaking receiver to a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting in the shallow zone where the drag route usually wins.
Call this on early downs in 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium situations since it takes a few seconds to develop and needs a clean pocket for the trail route to separate.
Pair this play with HB Angle or Curl Flat earlier in a series to bait linebackers into jumping shorter routes, then hit Slot Trail once they start biting on quick game.
