This is a man beater and zone beater hybrid: the HB angle punishes linebackers who bite on the curl or get lost in man coverage, while the two curls sit down in soft spots against zone. Primary read progression starts with the curl to the play side, works to the HB angle if a blitz is showing, then comes back to the backside curl if the defense sits on the underneath routes.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers will jump the HB angle route and open up both curls behind them. Key the free safety pre-snap: a single high safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, meaning the curls have more room to sit in the intermediate zone. Two deep safeties pre-snap suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4, so expect the curls to be squeezed by underneath zone defenders sinking to the flat. If the defense shows blitz with a linebacker walking up, the HB angle becomes the immediate answer since it releases quickly into open space vacated by the blitzer. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle hook zone can undercut the backside curl, so look to the flat or HB angle if you see a defender sitting flat-footed reading the QB's eyes.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap since the HB alignment shift can bait linebackers into showing blitz or man match. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the curls sitting down in the soft zone between the underneath defenders and deep safeties. Hot route the backside curl into a deeper dig if you see two-high safeties bailing hard to remove the natural curl window. This play shines on second and medium to long third down since it gives a built-in checkdown with the HB angle against pressure. Pair it with HB Draw or Read Option from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then hit this curl concept once they start creeping up expecting run action.
