Mtn Y Cross is a Shotgun Box Offset Wk pass concept built around a deep crossing route from the Y (TE) that works from the strong side all the way across the field. Both outside receivers push vertical up the numbers to stretch the defense deep and clear the middle for the crosser, while the offset back releases on a flat/angle route underneath as a checkdown against blitzes. The near slot runs a quick pivot/comeback to occupy underneath zone defenders. This is a man beater at its core, using the deep cross to create natural separation against man coverage while the two verticals hold safeties in place, with the primary read progression starting on the Y crosser, then working to the checkdown in the flat if the crosser is covered.
Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness of this play, so if you see cornerbacks pressed at the line, expect the Y crosser to be the target. Sit a linebacker or nickel defender in the middle hook zone to jump the crossing route, this is the single best way to shut down the primary read. Bracket the two vertical routes with safeties if the offense is showing this concept, since it removes the deep threat and forces a quick underneath checkdown. Blitzing the offset back's side can disrupt the checkdown option, but be wary of leaving the crosser unaccounted for since it develops quickly across the middle. Watch for user-controlled defenders sinking into the shallow cross lane, that lurk technique is the most effective way to bait the quarterback into a turnover on this route.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as cornerbacks aligned tight with no safety help over the top, since the deep crosser is designed to win on rub and separation against trailing defenders.
Motion the offset back or check the flat route release before the snap to confirm if the defense follows in man or stays put in zone, this tells you whether to prioritize the cross or the checkdown.
Use this on second and medium to long distance situations where you need a chunk gain, since the deep cross takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket.
Pair this with Curl Flat or HB Angle from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a quick underneath game and the slower developing crosser, this keeps linebackers from jumping the crossing route.
If the user controls a linebacker and drops into the crosser's lane, reset your eyes immediately to the checkdown or the far vertical route for an explosive play against blown coverage.
