RPO Zone Alert Bubble is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Ace Slot Offset that pairs an inside zone run with a bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. The quarterback reads the alert defender (usually the flat defender or nearest linebacker to the bubble side) at the snap: if that defender crashes down to fill the run fit, the ball gets thrown quickly to the bubble; if he sits or widens to cover the bubble, the QB hands off or pulls it to run zone behind the offensive line's zone blocking scheme. This is a zone beater against light-box defenses and a run-first counter against overly aggressive slot defenders, making it one of the most reliable pre-snap to post-snap decision plays in the set.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat or overhang defender assigned to the bubble side. If he steps up into the run fit at the snap, that is your green light to throw the bubble immediately. Check linebacker depth pre-snap. Linebackers playing downhill or stacked tight to the line signal an aggressive run blitz that the bubble screen will exploit. Read the safety shell before the snap. Two-high shells with soft corners over the slot tend to sit on the bubble, which should push the quarterback toward the zone run instead. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender flying out to jump the bubble route. If the user commits early, this opens up the inside zone run or a cutback lane since the box is now lighter. Watch for a nano blitz or fast inside linebacker crash off the edge. Aggressive A-gap shoots can blow up the zone run, so be ready to get the bubble out fast before the pocket collapses.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and use this play whenever the defense shows six or fewer men in the box, since that confirms the zone run lane is there if the alert defender crashes down.
Identify the slot cornerback or overhang defender's alignment pre-snap. If he is playing outside leverage or backpedaling into a deep zone, take the bubble immediately for a free five to seven yards.
Use hot routes sparingly here since the design is meant to be fast; if you must adjust, motion the bubble receiver's blocker or shift the offset back to change the alert defender's assignment.
Mix this play call with RPO Alert Bubble and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap.
Best used on early downs (first and second) and in short yardage third downs where a five to seven yard bubble gain or a positive zone run both move the chains.
