Post Wheel Shallow is a three level route combo out of Ace Slot Offset that isolates the boundary and attacks all three coverage levels at once. The outside receiver runs a post that breaks hard upfield, the inside receiver stems outside then breaks vertically upfield on a wheel route out of the backfield area, and a shallow crosser drags underneath from the opposite side to clear the middle and give a checkdown option against blitz. This is a man beater at its core since the wheel route creates a natural rub and leverage mismatch against man defenders, but the shallow drag also gives you a built in answer versus zone drops if the underneath defenders sit on the post. Primary read progression starts with the post for the deep shot, works down to the wheel if the safety rotates over the top, and finishes with the shallow crosser as the outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the slot is the biggest green light for this play since the wheel route will consistently win against linebackers or slower corners in man. Watch for a single high safety rotating late toward the post side, which tips man coverage underneath and confirms the wheel should be your first progression instead of the post. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender sitting on the shallow crosser can bait you into a bad read, so key the flat defender's depth before committing to the checkdown. Zone blitz packages that bring an extra rusher off the edge will collapse the pocket before the wheel route develops, so check protection or use the shallow drag as a quick outlet against pressure. If the defense shows Cover 2 with the corner squatting on the flat, expect the post to be the primary answer since the safety cannot get over the top of both the post and wheel simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot corner or nickel defender because the wheel route only works if that defender is playing tight man or bailing late out of a bail technique.

Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses expect a shorter route concept, since the double move nature of the wheel catches aggressive defenders jumping the shallow drag.

If you see two deep safeties in a shell, hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper in-route or sit route to beat the underneath zone defenders sitting in the middle of the field.

Pair this play with China Double In or Levels Y Sail earlier in a series to condition the defense into thinking every play is intermediate crossing routes, then hit the wheel for the explosive play once they bite.

Motion the inside receiver pre-snap if your playbook allows it to get a free look at man versus zone based on whether the defender follows across the formation.
