Defensive Reads

Against zone coverage, key the flat defender and corner defender relationship, if they collision and pass off routes cleanly the corner window shrinks and you should work the checkdown. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if linebackers sit shallow and do not respect the play fake they can undercut the flat route and squeeze the shallow drag. Cover 2 shells with a hard flat defender jumping the shallow route away can bait a quick underneath throw, but the corner route behind that flat defender is still the higher value shot play read.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by not immediately flicking to pass, let the play action animation play out fully to hold linebackers and safeties in the box.

Use this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to respect the run action.

Pre-snap, identify if the safety over the corner route is playing deep half or cheating toward the box, if he is cheating up this route hits for a big gap over the top.

Hot route the backside vertical into a dig or comeback against zone heavy defenses to give yourself an underneath answer if the corner route is capped.

Pair this with Same Side Zone or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to get defenders keying run fast, then hit them with PA Y Corner once linebackers start flowing hard on run fakes.
