Breakdown

PA Y Corner is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Ace Slot Offset that sells the run fake before attacking the seam and sideline. The Y (in-line TE) breaks off a corner route that stems up the seam then bends toward the sideline as the deep primary read, while the outside receiver runs a vertical clearout and the offset TE releases into a shallow drag underneath as the checkdown. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback/dig on a red route that holds the flow of the defense, giving you a three level stretch: the vertical clears out deep coverage, the Y corner attacks the intermediate to deep outside void, and the shallow drag gives you a quick answer versus pressure. This is primarily a man beater against single high looks, using the corner route's break to separate from trailing linebackers or safeties in man coverage, though it also has zone answers if the corner route settles into the hole between the flat and deep defenders.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this is the biggest tell that the corner route has a favorable one on one matchup versus man coverage. Watch the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage, if they sit soft outside the numbers pre-snap they can undercut the corner route break and jump the throw. Key linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play action run fake it opens a clean throwing lane for the Y corner and confirms zone or man defenders are out of position. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sinking into the deep third or hole behind the corner route, this lurk threat is the primary counter to this concept and forces you to check down to the drag route. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and a deep third corner playing outside leverage is the toughest shell to beat this play with, since it takes away both the corner route sideline and the shallow drag underneath.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the snap since the Y corner route wins big against man coverage and thins out zone drops behind it.

Use play action on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when the defense is respecting inside zone or outside zone tendencies from this same formation to freeze linebackers and get a cleaner corner route release.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, consider hot routing the vertical clearout route into a post to occupy the deep half safety and open up the corner route window.

Sequence this play after running Inside Zone or Outside Zone earlier in the drive so linebackers bite on the play fake, then pair it with PA Verts or PA Post Shot later in the game plan to keep the defense guessing between shot plays off the same run action.

Against aggressive user blitzers, the shallow drag route becomes your answer, so key the Mike linebacker blitz and get the ball out quick if he crashes downhill immediately.
