Read Option out of Shotgun Ace Slot Offset (12 personnel) is a designed run play that puts the QB in a mesh point read with the HB, aligned offset behind the QB. The diagram shows a standard read option mesh: the QB opens to the playside, rides the HB through the line, and reads an unblocked edge defender to decide whether to hand off or pull and keep. Both TEs and the offensive line execute zone/gap run blocking up front to seal the point of attack, making this a run-heavy play with no route concept drawn since it is not a pass design.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box and identify if the defense has walked a safety down into the run fit, which signals they are keying the mound and daring you to throw. Watch the playside DE or OLB alignment: if he is sitting wide and staying disciplined on the mesh, the QB keep lane opens up since the defense is playing assignment-sound option football. Post-snap, track linebacker flow and fill speed since fast-flowing linebackers can beat blockers to the point of attack on the give read and blow up the play in the backfield. This run concept struggles against gap-sound, disciplined defensive fronts with a dedicated scrape exchange defender who stays home on the QB every time. User the playside read defender manually if you are on defense to force the offense into a low-value give or a contained keep with nowhere to go, especially in short yardage situations.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only call this into light boxes (six or fewer defenders in the box) so your blockers have clean angles.
Identify whether the read defender (usually the playside DE or OLB) is crashing down on the mound or staying home, since that dictates hand off versus QB keep in real time.
Use this against aggressive, attacking defensive fronts and blitz-heavy defenses that send extra bodies inside, since the unblocked read key is easier to exploit when the defense sells out on the interior run.
Pair Read Option with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the QB keep and the perimeter bubble screen off identical mesh action.
Sprinkle in PA Verts and PA Y Corner off this same formation once the defense starts crashing hard on the mound, since your play action shots off similar backfield action will hit explosive plays over the top.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and medium) to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against both run and RPO looks from this set.
