Breakdown

Read Option Wk is a run play out of the Pistol Ace Double Wing formation with 23 personnel, showing a QB read option to the weak side (left) as indicated by the red arrow. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme flowing left while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to decide between handing off to the HB or keeping the ball himself. This is a pure run concept with no route combos shown, designed to attack the edge with a numbers advantage based on the QB's real-time read.

Defensive Reads

Watch the weak side defensive end or outside linebacker pre-snap, since his run fit discipline determines whether the QB keeps or hands off. If the defense shows a heavy box with extra defenders crashing downhill, expect the QB read to favor keeping the ball outside the crashing defender. Man coverage with aggressive edge defenders who key the mesh point can blow up the keep read, so be ready to check into HB Dive or Strong Power if the edge stays home every snap. Zone shells with linebackers reading run gaps quickly will limit cutback lanes, so look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side pre-snap. Overloaded fronts to the play side signal the defense expects the run this direction, which can be countered by setting up Wide Zone Wk or HB Counter later in the drive.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify the weak side edge defender you will be reading and count the box to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping the ball.

Look for defenses that crash hard on run fits or bring an extra man into the box, since a disciplined edge defender who sits and reads can shut down your keep option.

Use the manual QB slide or spin move if you keep the ball to avoid the read defender's tackle attempt in the backfield.

Pair this play with Speed Option and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenders guessing on whether the read side will be strong or weak and whether the QB is keeping or handing off.

This play works best on early downs and short yardage since it forces linebackers to respect both the edge and interior run threats, opening up Mtn PA Power Spot or PA Boot as play-action complements later in the series.
