Breakdown

Mtn Duo is a Duo concept run out of Pistol Ace Double Wing with 23 personnel, using pre-snap motion to adjust the box count before the snap. The offensive line executes double team blocks at the point of attack to create a vertical push, allowing the HB to press the hole and read the double teams before deciding to bounce or stick with downhill pressure. This is a power run play designed to overwhelm the interior of the defense, with the primary read being the natural cutback lane created by the double team blocks up front, not a pass or RPO concept.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers who crash down hard on the double team can be gashed with a cutback lane. Identify if the defense shows an odd front with a nose tackle since this alignment can clog the primary double team gap and force a quicker bounce read. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and can shut down the interior lanes this play relies on. Post-snap, key on user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side, since a disciplined backside linebacker or safety can spill the run and limit the cutback. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is where this play succeeds most, while heavy blitz packages with extra defenders stacked inside will disrupt the double team timing.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running man or zone coverage based on how the defender reacts to the moving receiver.

Check the box count before the snap and if there are more than six defenders in the box, consider audibling to a pass play from this same formation instead.

This play works best on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are not stacked specifically for the run.

Pair Mtn Duo with Mtn HB Power O and HB Counter from the same set to keep defenders guessing on gap direction since all three use similar formation dressing.

Trust the double team blocks up front and let the HB press the line before making a lateral cut, avoid bouncing outside too early since the design intent is downhill.
