Read Option out of Pistol Ace Double Wing lines up the QB in the gun with the HB offset to his side, and the diagram shows a simple give or keep read to the play side with the ball carrier icon working laterally off the QB before hitting the edge. This is a pure zone read run play, not a play-action or RPO, with the offensive line executing zone blocking steps to seal the play side gap while the QB reads the edge defender to decide whether to hand off or pull and attack the perimeter. The primary read progression is the play side defensive end: if he crashes down on the dive path, the QB pulls and bounces outside, and if he stays wide to contain, the QB hands off for the interior lane.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap alignment, if he is sitting wide in a contain technique the defense is coached to take away the QB keep, so plan on the dive. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is stacked tight to the line he is likely a designed run blitzer and will blow up both the dive and the keep before the mesh point develops. Man coverage with a nickel or dime look tends to leave light boxes and is where this play hits hardest, since fewer defenders are left to fit the run gaps. Watch for a scraping Mike linebacker who flows hard to the mesh point, that is a sign of a user spy or lurk defender designed to take away the QB run option specifically. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating down into the box before the snap signal extra run support and this play should be checked out of in favor of a pass concept from the set.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense has a true read defender or if the CPU/user is going to auto-scrape or crash on every snap, since Madden AI tendencies can be exploited once you spot a pattern.
Use this against light boxes (6 or fewer defenders) since the zone blocking scheme struggles to handle extra run blitzers.
Hot route the play side wing or TE into a stalk block on the force defender if you are consistently getting blown up on the edge by a fast scraping linebacker.
Pair this with HB Dive and Speed Option from the same formation to keep defenders honest on the mesh point, since all three plays start with an identical initial mesh look.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) to stay ahead of the sticks, and mix in Mtn PA Power Spot off the same look to punish linebackers who bite hard on the run read.
