HB Stretch out of Pistol Ace Double Wing is an outside zone run play that sends the offensive line and both wing backs flowing laterally toward the playside edge, giving the HB a wide track before he decides to bounce it outside or press a cutback lane. The blocking scheme relies on zone steps and combo blocks that reach and seal defenders horizontally rather than firing straight downhill, forcing the defense to run sideline to sideline before the ball turns upfield. Primary read progression for the HB is playside cutback lanes first, reading the reach block on the edge defender, then the B gap bounce, then backside cutback if the front flows too hard.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front and check if the defense has shifted the line or linebackers toward the wing back side, since that tells you the reach block on the playside edge will be tougher. Watch safety depth: a single high safety often means the box is loaded and stretch will have less room to bounce outside, while two deep safeties suggest a lighter box that favors the zone run. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker: if they crash hard down the line, the cutback lane opens for the HB, but if they stay disciplined and squeeze, the ball has to bounce all the way outside. User-controlled defenders flowing hard playside to string the play out are the biggest threat, so look for a lurking linebacker or safety filling the alley before committing to the bounce. Stout defensive tackles who hold the point of attack against the double wing combo blocks will blow up the play at the mesh point before it can develop.
Usage Tips
Run this from early down and distance, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to stay ahead of the sticks and keep defenses honest. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box with wing backs able to reach the edge defenders, hit the stretch aggressively. Use the right or left directional stretch based on which side has the softer edge defender or a slower flowing linebacker. Pair this with HB Counter and Mtn HB Power O out of the same Ace Double Wing set so linebackers cannot sit on zone flow and get gashed by counter action off the same look. Against defenses that key run fast with linebackers crashing downhill, mix in Read Option or Speed Option from this set to hold the edge and punish overaggressive flow.
