Mtn HB Power O is a Power O run out of the Pistol Ace Double Wing formation with 23 personnel, featuring a pre-snap motion tag that shifts the extra blocker across the formation before the snap. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block for the HB while the double wing tight ends and fullback seal the edge and kick out the defensive end, creating a downhill lane between the tackle and the point of attack. This is a power run play designed to overload one side of the front, and the primary read progression starts with the HB pressing the initial hole then bouncing outside if the pulling guard's kick out gets stood up at the point of attack.
Watch the strong safety and weak side linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting tight to the line this play will struggle since the extra gap defender clogs the power lane. Check for a 4-3 under front or 46 front with a stacked box, these alignments put extra bodies at the point of attack and can blow up the pulling guard's kick out block. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash down hard the HB should bounce this outside off the double wing edge blocks. Beware of a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole (lurk) since Power O concepts are vulnerable to a quick-triggering Mike linebacker who reads the pulling guard. This scheme is most effective against light boxes out of nickel or dime sub packages where defenses are geared to stop the pass, since the extra double wing blockers create a numbers advantage at the point of attack.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the man or staying home in zone, this tells you whether you are facing man or zone coverage before the snap.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses have not committed to a pass-heavy nickel or dime package.
If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders after the motion, consider audibling to a play-action shot off this same look since the run action will hold linebackers.
Pair this with Mtn Duo and Strong Power in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Use manual control on the fullback or lead blocker to identify the most advantageous kick out target rather than trusting the CPU logic against odd fronts.
