Strong Power is a downhill gap run out of the Pistol Ace Double Wing look with 23 personnel, showing heavy formation strength to the play side with two wing backs stacked near the line and the HB aligned behind the QB in the pistol. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block while the wings and tight ends seal the edge, creating a power gap for the HB to run behind. This is a pure run play with no route concept to read, and the primary progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the lead blocker's path, and decide between the A gap and bouncing outside if the edge is sealed.
Look for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers stacked tight behind the line, this alignment tells you the defense is expecting run and may be selling out to stop the power gap. Watch safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shallow or crashing down into the box this play can get gang tackled quickly so consider an audible. Post snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard inside to fill the gap the HB should bounce it outside the sealed edge. Man-heavy blitz packages with linebackers shooting gaps can blow this play up before the pulling guard gets set, so identify blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap. Zone defenses that flow hard to the play side call side will struggle to contain the backside cutback lane, so patience on the cutback can turn a stuffed run into a big gain.
Run this out of 23 personnel when you want to force base or heavy fronts and control tempo against defenses light in the box. Check the defender count in the box before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders down low this play has a numbers advantage and should hit for solid yardage. Use the pulling guard as your primary blocking read post snap, follow his shoulders to know whether to cut inside or bounce it outside. Pair this with Mtn HB Power O and HB Counter from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which gap the lead blocker is attacking. Best called on short yardage or early down situations where you want to establish the run and set up play-action shots like PA Boot or Mtn PA Power Spot later in the series.
