Over Wide is a defensive set inside the 4-2-5 Big Nickel formation, and the "Wide" tag is the key differentiator: both defensive ends align outside the tackles with a widened front, which stretches the offensive line horizontally and opens natural B gap and A gap rush lanes for the two linebackers and the nickel. Compared to tighter 4-2-5 sets that stack bodies over the guards, Over Wide trades interior gap integrity for edge speed and containment, making it the preferred look against heavy outside zone, stretch runs, and quarterback rollout teams who want to get to the perimeter.
The personnel breakdown is a standard Big Nickel shell: RLE, RRE, RDT, and NT up front, two linebackers (with SUBLB as the substitutable spot), and five defensive backs including SLCB in the slot. That SUBLB tag is the real value in franchise play. Dropping a rangy safety or a coverage linebacker into that spot lets you play Tampa 2 and Cover 3 Sim Pressure without giving up seam throws, while the SLCB position lets you put a legitimate man cover corner over the slot instead of asking a linebacker to chase a receiver on an option route.
The playbook here is unusually deep for a nickel set. You get the full zone tree (Cover 3 Sky, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6, Tampa 2, Cover 3 Cloud Show 2), a complete man menu (Cover 2 Man, Cover 1 Hole, Cover 1 Robber, Cover 1 Sting Wk, Fire Man), and a pressure package that ranges from simple edge pressure (Sam Blitz 3, Will Blitz 3) to simulated pressure (Cover 3 Sim Pressure, Invert 2 Sim) to all-out heat (Double CB Blitz, Thunder Smoke, Free Fire 3). That range means you can run your entire defensive game plan out of one alignment and force your opponent to guess post-snap rather than read your personnel.
Live in Cover 3 Sim Pressure and Invert 2 Sim on early downs, since the show blitz look forces your opponent to burn a pre-snap protection adjustment while you still have coverage bodies behind the rush
Save Double CB Blitz and Thunder Smoke for third down and long or obvious empty formations, and always user control a deep safety so you can help on the isolated receiver
Pinch the defensive line and shift linebackers inside when you read a heavy run formation, because the default wide alignment gives up the interior gaps you need to fill
Put your best coverage safety at SUBLB before the snap in franchise, then lean on Tampa 2 and Cover 1 Hole to wall off crossers and deep middle seam routes
Use Cover 6 and Cover 4 Quarters against 3x1 and trips when you expect vertical stems, and rotate your user to the passing strength so you can jump the outside comeback
Manually reassign the SLCB to the most dangerous slot receiver in your man calls (Cover 2 Man, Cover 1 Robber) instead of accepting the default matchup on motion
