Watch for both safeties starting at depth with a two high shell pre-snap, that is your indicator the defense is in Tampa 2 and protecting the deep middle rather than showing single high. Key the tight end or slot receiver running a seam or skinny post, since that route is exactly what the Mike linebacker's deep drop is designed to take away, if the Mike gets there in time this throw should be covered. Identify four verticals or trips concepts that put three receivers to one side, since that formation can overload the flat and curl zones and force the corner or Sam to choose between the flat route and the deep out, which is where this coverage is most vulnerable. Look for quarterbacks attacking the deep corners on go routes right at the numbers, since Tampa 2 sacrifices some deep outside help to protect the middle, a stacked receiver or double move outside can beat this shell if the Mike drop is too aggressive to the inside. Recognize hard play-action rollouts that pull the underneath zone defenders out of position, since disciplined zone drops are the core strength of this play and any scheme that manipulates linebacker eyes with misdirection can create throwing lanes before the shell reforms.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to test the middle of the field with seam routes or post combos, since Tampa 2 is built to erase that exact throw. Before the snap, check if the offense has two receivers stacked or running vertical stems from the slot, that is your tip that they are hunting the deep middle hole this coverage is designed to close. User the Mike linebacker directly and manually widen or deepen his drop based on the quarterback's shoulder turn, since the AI Mike can be late getting to the seam against fast-developing throws.
