Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 is a zone defense out of the 4-2-5 Over Wide set that disguises its shell before the snap to bait quarterbacks into bad reads. Pre-snap the defense shows a two high safety look (Show 2), then rotates one safety down into a cloud corner support role while the defense drops into a three deep, four under Cover 3 shell after the snap. The primary read progression for the defender in coverage is corner to flat to curl, with the cornerback reading the number two receiver to determine whether he sinks deep or squats on underneath routes, while the strong safety keys the run fit and flat responsibilities on the boundary.
Pre-snap identify if the offense shifts protection or motions a receiver to test the two high look, since that tells you whether they respect the disguise or are hunting matchups. Post-snap watch the cornerback rotate down into his cloud run support technique, this beats quick outs, hitches, and flat routes because he is already sitting on that space instead of playing off. This shell is vulnerable to deep in cuts and dig routes that attack the seam between the rotated corner and the deep middle safety, so watch for user controlled receivers working that window. Linebacker depth on the curl to flat drops is critical, if your Mike or Sam linebacker sits too shallow, quarterbacks will hit speed outs and stick routes in front of them for easy conversions. Look for play action rollouts and RPOs designed to attack the cloud corner's aggressive run fit, since offenses will try to hold him with run fakes before throwing behind him on double moves.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when offenses are more likely to run play action off a two high safety read since the disguise punishes quarterbacks who key the safeties instead of the corners and linebackers. Use the Show 2 shell to sit on deep out and comeback throws that attack traditional Cover 3, since the cloud corner is already in position to jump those routes. Pair this with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Sim Pressure in the same play calling sequence so the offense cannot distinguish your disguises before the snap, forcing hesitation in the pocket. Hot route your flat defender to widen if you expect quick game or bubble screens, and be ready to sink your curl flat defender deeper against teams that stack the boundary with vertical stems. Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals stacks unless you trust your deep third defenders to carry seams, since Cloud Show 2 does not add extra deep help compared to standard Cover 3.
