Fire Man is a man-blitz package out of the 4-2-5 Over Wide set that sends a fire zone style blitz look but rotates into man coverage underneath with a robber or blitzing linebacker attacking the backfield. The defense pressures with a Sam or Will off the edge while the secondary locks up receivers in man across the board, using the extra defensive back from the Big Nickel personnel to match slot and tight end releases. Primary read progression for the defense is to identify the blitzer's lane first, then key the quarterback's eyes to jump the first in-cut or shallow crosser since man defenders are playing with inside leverage and trail technique.
Key the running back's release out of the backfield first since he is the most common answer against pressure and often the blitzer's man responsibility Watch for a natural rub or pick route near the line of scrimmage, this beats the man coverage leverage and creates the biggest explosive play risk Read offensive tackle depth and quarterback drop, a quick three step drop signals a hot route beater designed to exploit the blitz before it arrives Trail technique on outside receivers is vulnerable to double moves and comeback routes if the corner bites on the initial stem Look for the offense sliding protection toward your bring pressure side, if they identify the blitzer pre snap they will likely check to a quick game answer that beats man coverage underneath
Call Fire Man on early down and medium distance situations where offenses expect zone drops after seeing your zone heavy calls like Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters earlier in the series
Disguise the blitz by aligning safeties like you would in Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber pre snap so the quarterback cannot distinguish man pressure from a standard single high shell
User the closest defender to the running back or check release tight end since Fire Man leaves your linebackers matched in man with less help over the top
Bring pressure from the same gap you used on Sam Blitz 3 or Will Blitz 3 to keep the offensive line guessing on protection slides
Pair this call with Cover 1 Sting Wk in your play sequence so quarterbacks cannot key blitz direction from formation tendencies alone
