Invert 2 Sim is a five man sim pressure package out of the Over Wide 4-2-5 that disguises a two deep shell before rotating coverage underneath. The defensive line brings a four man rush with an overload look while the linebackers and defensive backs invert into zone drops, creating confusion for the quarterback on where the underneath voids sit. This is a zone based sim blitz, not a true blitz, so the primary read for the defense is the inside linebacker mirroring the running back out of the backfield while the deep safeties read the number one and two receivers on each side for any vertical shots down the seams.
Key the running back release out of the backfield first since the inverting linebacker is responsible for picking him up in man or shallow zone depending on the check. Watch the deep safeties rotate post snap, if they invert late the offense can exploit a seam route before the zone fully sets. This call beats spot concepts, quick outs, and shallow drag combinations because the underneath defenders sit in the passing lanes those routes attack. Man beater route combos with a vertical stem against the corner working press outside can expose the inversion if the corner is late getting his eyes back to the quarterback. Watch for user pressure timing versus a max protect scheme, if the offense picks up all four rushers cleanly the coverage shell can be picked apart by a deep crosser sitting behind the linebacker drop.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to dial up a quick game or spot concept since the underneath defenders invert to sit on those routes.
Use the pre-snap alignment to sell base Cover 2 or Cover 3 and bait the quarterback into throwing into the rotation before the routes fully develop.
Motion boost your slot corner or user the underneath robber defender if you suspect a shallow drag or flat route combo attacking the inversion.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sim Pressure and Free Fire 3 in the same set so your sim pressure package looks identical pre-snap and keeps opposing quarterbacks guessing on protection assignments.
Avoid calling this against heavy play action rollout teams on early downs since the four man rush can be manipulated by max protect looks, giving the quarterback time to find the void in the inverted zones.
