Breakdown

Thunder Smoke is a five man pressure package out of the Over Wide 4-2-5 that sends the Sam and Will linebackers on a double inside blitz while dropping the defensive line into a modified zone shell behind it. This is a nano style blitz designed to overload the interior protection and collapse the pocket before the quarterback can climb, making it a strong answer to teams that lean on quick game or empty protections. The primary read is not a coverage progression but a pressure read: identify whether the blitz gets a free runner off the snap, and if it does not, fall back to the underneath zone defenders who are sinking to take away hot throws and check downs.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check for a lone deep safety or two high shell. Thunder Smoke performs best against one high looks since the underneath defenders are not stretched thin covering vertical shots. Watch the running back and tight end release patterns immediately after the snap. If they release into the flat or check down, your zone defenders need to sink and mirror rather than chase the blitz aggression. Key the offensive line slide protection. If the center and guards slide toward your Sam blitz, redirect your user defender to loop opposite for a cleaner rush lane. This play gets exposed by hot routes that convert slot receivers into quick outs or slants right at the vacated blitz gaps, so be ready to user jump those throwing lanes. Against play action rollouts, discipline is key: do not let your edge rushers overrun the pocket, since a contained quarterback can escape the pressure and create explosive plays outside the numbers.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when offenses are still establishing protection identity, since the blitz timing punishes teams that slide protect late.

Pre snap, check the offensive personnel and running back alignment. If the back is set to the same side as your Sam and Will blitz, user that back immediately after the snap to prevent a check release that kills the pressure.

Use your user controlled defender to spy the quarterback on mobile signal callers, then bail into a shallow zone if no run threat materializes.

Pair Thunder Smoke with Cover 3 Sim Pressure or Free Fire 3 earlier in a series so the offense cannot key on down and distance tendencies, then dial up Thunder Smoke once they start hot routing slot receivers to beat zone drops.

Avoid calling this into empty formations against teams that throw quick screens, since the vacated underneath zones can get exposed if your defensive line does not disrupt the throwing lanes.
